Saturday, September 2, 2017 10am – 10pm

GULFPORT, FL: Calling all flower children, hippies and tree huggers! Flock to Gulfport’s waterfront and bring your buds for a day of peace, art and music! Gulfport invites you to the 17th Annual Geckofest, presented by Eyeglass World, celebrating the end of summer with its largest festival of the year, honoring this waterfront village’s unofficial mascot and favorite reptile, the Gecko!

Drag out those bell-bottoms from the back of your closet and get groovy at “Geckostock”. Celebrating the 1969 Woodstock Festival and featuring a host of hippie-themed festivities, Geckofest will feature themed, live music on two stages, presented by Sprint and The Blueberry Patch, and strolling as well as stationary performances presented by Extreme Entertainment.

Appearing on the Sprint Stage: Dan Stevens, The Cozmic Cowboyz, The Schmitz Brothers, DivaDivaDiva!, Janis Joplin AKA Wes Sloat-Ray and Peace of Woodstock.

Appearing on the Blueberry Patch Stage:  Laura Shepherd, Askew, Tropical Disturbance, Troy Youngblood and the Soulfish, and Boxcar Hollow.

Street Performers include: The Dallas and Nick Show, Acromaniacts, Crazy Indy, Loz Primoz Breakerz, Shaun Jay, David Ferman, The Amazing Kenny Toombs, West Coast Mutineer Hippies, Captain Jack Sparrow, Darth Vader, Robert the balloon Man, Spiderman, Sterling the Silver Statue, Family Guy’s Stewie and M.A.D. Flames Fire Entertainment.

Shop the vendors, join the quirky walking parade, colorful costume contests, and the ever-popular end-of-the-day dueling street dances that wrap up this light-hearted send-off to summer. It’s going to be far-out and outta sight, man!

Parking and admission to Geckofest is complimentary and the event is pet and family-friendly.

The Gulfport Trolley offers visitors who park in designated off-site locations transportation between their vehicle and the festival site at no charge. GetGO, Gulfport’s 5 passenger electric vehicles, will also be available to pick up residents or visitors and deliver them to their desired destination with no parking worries!

This year’s GECKOFEST is sponsored in part by the following supporters: The City of Gulfport, Eyeglass World (Presenting Sponsor), Sprint (South Stage Sponsor), The Blueberry Patch (North Stage Sponsor), Great Bay Budweiser, The Gabber, Little Tommie’s Tiki, Pitzen Studios, Gulfport Beach Bazaar, Salty’s Gulfport, Reefdog Gifts & Grooming, Extreme Entertainment, GEICO, All American Gutter Protection, BBI Nova, Paradise News, ProSuzy, Rainbow 411, GSH Radio, Smokin’ J’s Real Texas BBQ, Tampa Bay Times, tbt*, GoTonight, Home Performance Alliance, LeafFilter, MOR TV, My Gorilla Garage, Tampa Bay Sound and Production, MOR TV, Florida Resort Exchange, Luxury Bath Tampa Bay, Manatees on the Bay, Marine Max, Tobacco Free Florida, and YELP.

Gulfport’s Gecko Ball Is Almost Here!

GULFPORT, FLORIDA: Tickets for the Ninth Annual Gecko Ball are on sale, but a limited supply of tickets remains. The Ball will be celebrated with a theme of “Geckostock!” on Saturday, August 26th, 2017. Plan now for the event known as Gulfport’s party of the year!

The party will be a celebration of hippie culture and the legendary 1969 Woodstock Festival. Décor and scenery will transport ball-goers into a psychedelic era. Expect to experience over-the-top revelry and costumes, from hippies to rock stars to other 60s cultural and political touchstones. Ball-goers are encouraged to develop costumes relating to hippies, Woodstock and all things 1960s, or to geckos, or any creative combination! A costume contest will help decide some of the best outfits at the Ball.

“Geckostock” will be held at the historic waterfront Gulfport Casino Ballroom (5500 Shore Boulevard South) from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Saturday, August 26th. The event gets larger and more popular each year, including over the top décor, full cash bar, geckotinis, hippie juice and other cocktail specials, passed hors d’oeuvre and tapas. Live music by the Throwback Band will fill the dance floor this year with 60s-era pop, rock and soul music as well as hits from nearby decades. Hundreds of silent auction items will be up for bids, and the annual live auction of artist-created geckos will once again be a highlight of the evening. Witness the whimsical coronation of Gulfport’s next Gecko Queen!

Tickets are $35 per person and are on sale at the Gulfport Welcome Center (3101 Beach Boulevard South) or the Gulfport Beach Bazaar (3115 Beach Boulevard South). Tickets may also be purchased online with a credit or debit card at VisitGulfportFlorida.com. The Gecko Ball sells out every year, so would-be Ball-goers should purchase tickets as soon as possible. While they last, reserved tables of ten or twelve are available for group reservations only if all tickets for the table are purchased in person at the Gulfport Welcome Center in one transaction.

Gulfport celebrates the Gecko each year with a series of whimsical events at the end of summer. The Gecko Ball occurs one week prior to the 17th Annual GeckoFest street festival (September 2nd), and each year the Ball’s theme also lends itself to costumes that GeckoFest participants are encouraged to flaunt during the Fest’s walking parade. The Tenth Annual Gecko Crawl will be held August 12th this year, and the third annual “Art Gecko Show” will be held during the month of August, with an opening reception on August 4th. All Gecko events are sponsored by the non-profit Gulfport Merchants Association and a portion of proceeds is donated to local charities each year. Community Support Grants this year will be made to the Creative Play Preschool and the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund. Visit GeckoFest.com for more information on all events.

GULFPORT WELCOMES YOU!

SHOP, DINE, STAY & PLAY BY THE BAY…

We’ve been called funky, eclectic, artsy, charming, progressive, welcoming, warm, and yes, even weird.

We’ve been called funky, eclectic, artsy, charming, progressive, welcoming, warm, and yes, even weird.

We are a small town, but we have a big heart.  It’s easy to make yourself at home here.  Visit us and we think you’ll agree.

All of the businesses in our waterfront village are independently owned and operated.

All of the businesses in our waterfront village are independently owned and operated.

No chain stores here. No parking meters.  Just small-town warmth and people as friendly and welcoming as they come.  Our village offers the best of “Old Florida” charm.  Picture old oaks draped in Spanish moss, brick-paved streets, small colorful cottages, and light shimmering on the Bay.

Beach and Shore Boulevards are at the heart of our historic downtown area, situated on scenic Boca Ciega Bay.

Unique, independent shops and boutiques offer the work of local artists as well as apparel, books, gifts, home décor, antiques, bath, body and wellness products and much more.  Many choices are available to pamper yourself while you visit: spas, salons, skin care, massage therapy and more are available.

Isabelle's at the Peninsula Inn

A concentration of more than a dozen restaurants in the village has made Gulfport a premier dining destination.

A wide variety of foods in all price ranges is represented within just a few blocks, from sandwiches and burgers to fine dining.  Live entertainment is featured in several locations throughout the week.

Sea Breeze Manor Bed and Breakfast

Overnight accommodations in the village are also of the unique variety, offered by two independent venues with great attention to Gulfport-style hospitality.

Individually furnished rooms and suites are offered with their own identity, such as the Marrakech or Serengeti at the Peninsula Inn, and the Jamaica or Aruba at the Sea Breeze Manor.  Some locals also offer cottages or guest apartments for rent on an independent basis.

There’s always something going on here.

There’s always something going on here.

Visit a selection of artists and crafters, from breathtaking to funky, on the first Friday and third Saturday of each month for our popular Art Walk. Beach Boulevard’s trees are lit up, shops and restaurants are open late, visitors and locals mingle on the street, and that “only-in-Gulfport” energy ebbs high.

Our Tuesday Fresh Market days happen each week throughout the year

Our Tuesday Fresh Market days happen each week throughout the year, offering fresh fruits and veggies, breads, cheese, seafood, honey, plants and more of the best of what local vendors have to offer.

It’s a chance to find food for your body and community spirit for your soul.  Special events throughout the year offer a chance to celebrate and mingle:  our Get Rescued event is an animal rescue street festival in our very dog-loving town; Spring Fest celebrates the change of seasons; the Pink Flamingo home tour unlocks surprises in a selection of local homes; the July 4th Celebration is a homespun event that surprises with its world-class fireworks display; and Gecko Fest is the grand-daddy of our festivals, luring thousands of visitors to Beach Blvd. to celebrate the end of summer in a fun-loving salute to our favorite lizard.  (Remember the weird part?)  Sprinkle liberally with smaller events: open mike night at the Art Village Courtyard, Swing dance night at the Casino, first Friday drum circles and more.  Add your own energy to the mix.

Gulfport is a beach town.

Our beach, overlooking Boca Ciega Bay, features white sand and calm waters.  Picnicking, volleyball, kid’s areas, bocce ball and more are favorite pastimes here.

Our Clam Bayou Nature Park is a living/breathing estuary full of bird, marine and plant life, and is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail.  Visit Clam Bayou by canoe or kayak, or stroll along walking paths and overlooks.  The simple fun of a stroll through Gulfport’s brick-paved streets is one of the best ways to enjoy the local color of cottages, gardens and people.  Our historic Casino, on the waterfront, offers events and dancing most every night of the week, and is available for your event.  Catherine Hickman Theater hosts popular local and touring productions of plays, musical performances and more.

Gulfport is conveniently located to many other destinations in the area.

Gulf Beaches and downtown St. Petersburg are minutes away.  You can travel to Tampa, Ybor City and Busch Gardens in a half-hour, and a drive to or from Orlando is about two hours.

The Gulfport Merchants Association proudly represents local businesses, non-profits and other groups in the Waterfront District.

We meet on the first Monday of each month at locations throughout town.  If you are a business owner or think you might like to open for business in Gulfport, let us know.  We will be here to support you.

Beach and Shore Boulevards are at the heart of our historic downtown area, situated on scenic Boca Ciega Bay.

Come here tired and get revived.

Come here scorned and be accepted.

Come here misunderstood and find others like you.

Come here rushed and get laid-back.

Come here alone and make friends.

Come here happy and stay here happy.
